Gov. Sarah Palin, who did not see eye to eye with John McCain or his campaign strategist Steve Schmidt during the 2008 election campaign, looks forward to 2012, when she expects to be the GOP's presidential candidate.

NEWSWEEK confirms what we have long known. There was horrendous tension in the McCain camp between McCain's top staffers and Sarah Palin. Her $150,000 spending spree was seen as the actions of a hillbilly gone mad in the big city.

Palin's husband Todd, a man of few words, disliked the gruff and bullying Steve Schmidt. Nor was he comfortable around the cut and thrust of political wordplay.

John McCain was sheltered from much of this. His staffers did not want him to know just how much Palin had spent on clothes, nor that the wheels were coming off his campaign.

Palin Plans for 2012: Delivers Rousing Speech to Supporters, Attacks Obama

[Why diva Palin was not allowed to meet the press AND We explain why Sarah Palin will never be president]

The Scene: Yet another soulless room in a small town, this time Cape Girardeau, Missouri (birthplace of Rush Limbaugh). Sarah Palin is seated at a plastic, foldaway table sipping a bottle of water; it's an hour or so until she goes on stage to deliver the same stump speech she's given dozens of times before. Even she is bored with it.

Back in August and September, the McCain-Palin campaign was on a high. Now, with just a week to election day, defeat is staring Palin in the face. She and her closest advisors, Tucker Eskew and Tracey Shmitt, are working on her official concession speech.

But there are also ideas for an unofficial thank-you speech.  She jokes about this with Eskew and Schmitt while makeup artist Amy Strozzi buzzes in the background. There's an underlying seriousness to the conversation.

"Tuck," she says, "there's so much I can't say in this concession speech, it's like, y'know, I gotta be gracious to people I don't like, I gotta thank a bunch of losers who deserve no thanks, I gotta congratulate Nobama and I don't wanna do it. He didn't fight fair." [continues below]

Palin in tears

Palin forced to admit defeat after poor campaign

For days before the election, Sarah Palin was already working on her official concession speak. She was helped by aides Tucker Eskew and Tracey Schmitt, with input from other loyal members of the campaign team.

On election night, she had wanted to address the crowd in Phoenix after John McCain's concession speech. Steve Schmidt, the campaign's head strategist, refused to grant her request. She stood teary eyed with husband Todd behind campaign as he addressed the crowd.

Palin is bitter about the mismanaged campaign. She and Steve Schmidt dislike each other intensely. She is angry that  Schmidt did not let her meet the media for weeks after McCain picked her as her running mate.

Attempting to put a brave face on defeat, Palin called her supporters in Wasilla, Alaska and said: "We're going to be just fine. It is a shining moment tonight in history. We do congratulate Barack Obama. It's a great night in history. But I'll tell ya, Wasilla - and everybody there in Alaska - I am just proud to be able to represent Wasilla."

She continued: ""I am neither bitter nor vanquished, but very confident in the knowledge that there will be another day. We can do that even from the homefront up in Alaska. I can't wait to join you there in Alaska. God bless you, thank you very much, and I love you more than you'll ever know."

"I know, I know it sucks," says Eskew. "This could have been real close but Bulldog [Steve Schmidt, McCain campaign coordinator] screwed us over. He thought it was Bush-Kerry all over again. Obama is not John Kerry."

"Right," says Palin, "What was all that about, keeping me quiet those first weeks, like I didn't know what I wanted to say? Just made me look stupid. We all know that experience wasn't my strong point. We didn't need to hide the fact. Mavericks aren't supposed to know all that insider stuff. I'm so furious."

Tracy Schmitt interjects, "There're rules that have to be obeyed in any campaign, Sarah, you know that. We knew you had the skills to lead from day one, but Bulldog wanted to protect you, make sure the MSM didn't go after you."

"Man, I wanted that fight," says Palin. "Most of America hates the liberal media. I needed to take 'em on, expose their agenda and bias, expose Couric and her friends to the American people. There was, like, one rule for Nobama and another for me. They trashed my God, my kids, my outfits, my knowledge of the issues ... that Couric witch, man, if I ever get my hands on her... If they think I'm gonna run back to Wasilla with my tail between my legs, they got another thing coming. America loves me, Americans love Sarah Palin." [continues below]

Palin thanks her closest supporters, tells them she will fight again in four years.

"Yes they do," says Eskew, " so ... big picture ... we gotta work on this speech, get the tone right. You gotta thank John for the privilege of picking you blah, blah, blah, you gotta thank your supporters yada yada, you gotta shout

out to small town America, you gotta -- I know you don't want to -- but you gotta thank Obama and Biden for a good campaign. Then you gotta look forward, say how you'll always be ready to serve, kinda look forward to 2012 and beyond, like you're the future of the party... we gotta forget Bush, John, Romney all those old guys, put them behind us. We gotta focus on the future now, Sarah."

"That's right. I am the future of this party," says Palin, "but know what,  I'd like a private gathering, an unofficial speech to all you guys, the team, a zinger, you know, all the guys that helped me, Rush, Billy [Kristol], Seanie [Hannity], Hughie [Hugh Hewitt], Dobson, no forget Dobson, he tried to lecture me about Bristol... We need Tito [the builder], Joe [the plumber], those guys we met in Philly, the guys in Colorado, those military dudes, get 'em all together, we'll give 'em the real speech, know what I mean?"

"Brilliant idea, Sarah," says Schmitt. "I'll get started right away."
