Why Keep Sarah Palin's Medical
Records Private?
There are a number of reasons
why a person would not want their medical records to be released
to the public. Some of the reasons are strictly women-only. We
examine them one by one.
PRIVACY
A candidate might believe it's
an invasion of privacy to have their medical history available
to public scrutiny. Sarah Palin's statements indicate that the
public should take her at her word: "I'm healthy, happy,
I've had five kids, that's going to be in the medical
records." In other words, she's healthy, you don't need to
see the records, end of story.
TERMINATION OF PREGNANCY
This is a traumatic event for
any family, which would want to keep the matter private and not
parade it in front of the public, especially an extremely
intolerant and unforgiving evangelical community. As an
evangelical who believes in criminalizing termination, it is
impossible that Sarah Palin would have gone through this
procedure.
MISCARRIAGE
Again, another traumatic event
that a family would wish to keep private.
MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES
Any mental health issues with
associated therapy and/or medication would cast doubts over a
candidate's judgment and ability to lead under stress. It is
known that many Alaskans suffer from depression as a result of
the state's harsh climate and conditions, but Sarah Palin
appears to be a picture of health. Mental health issues are
unlikely, even with five children, because she has such a great
support team in the form of friends and family.
ADDICTION, SUBSTANCE ABUSE
People in cold, dark northern
climates whether it's Alaska, Canada, Scandinavia, Greenland,
Iceland or Russia, are notoriously heavy drinkers. Sarah Palin
seems to be an extremely health conscious person, so alcohol
abuse in the past is not likely to be on Sarah Palin's medical
records.
COSMETIC SURGERY
A candidate might be
embarrassed about any cosmetic procedures which might indicate
vanity. Liposuction, tummy tucks, facelifts, etc are becoming
more and more common among people in the public eye. There is no
evidence that Sarah Palin has undergone cosmetic surgery.
INVASIVE SURGERY
A candidate might not want the
public to know if they have had long or complicated surgery,
which would point to possible future problems. Some conditions
such as backache can be chronic. A candidate would not want the
public to know if they are in constant pain, or it might cause
concern if a candidate had taken a long time recovering from
surgery, required heavy medication or therapy in order to cope
with the aftermath of a complicated medical procedure.
HEART CONDITIONS
A history of heart ailments can
cause serious doubts among the electorate. There is no evidence
that Sarah Palin suffers from heart trouble, or has ever had any
heart problems.
BEAUTY, SELF-IMAGE ISSUES
If a candidate, for example,
has been obese, anorexic, or bulimic, it might affect how a
candidate thinks the public would perceive them. There are a
number of trivial medical problems that might be embarrassing
for a candidate, for example flatulence, piles, incontinence.
There is no evidence at all that Sarah Palin has, or does,
suffer from these.
CONCLUSION
We suggest that Sarah Palin
does not wish her records to be released for matters of privacy.
Until recently, Gov. Palin was an obscure politician
unaccustomed to public scrutiny. She is shocked by the media
interest in every aspect of her life. She says she is healthy, which should be enough to convince
us. If forced to speculate about a potential medical condition
that such a candidate would wish to keep private, we believe it
would be a history of depression.
