Sarah Palin and Paris Hilton: How to love a powerful woman

[Louboutin heels, bare feet, pantyhose and stockings]

Sarah Palin, soon to be ex-governor of Alaska, has to withstand sniping, sneering personal attacks from David Letterman. Paris Hilton, who has turned her own name into a multi-million dollar brand, is mocked as a bimbo and lightweight. Katie Couric is ridiculed for her love of pointed high heels and short skirts. Little Dana Perino had to run attack and dogged defense for George W. Life is tough for powerful women. Here we salute them.

Any man who by hard work builds up a small contracting firm is hailed as a hero for doing the right thing and providing for his family. No one knocks him down for being the owner of a tiny and sometimes struggling plumbing business (think Joe The Plumber).

But when Paris Hilton, that tiny, blonde slip of a girl, turns her name into a multi-million dollar empire, the masses don't applaud her, they sneer. "What does she do?", they ask. She can't sing, she can't act. Is she only famous for being famous?

Take a step back and attempt to understand how difficult it is to launch a brand, any brand, in today's cutthroat market, and then understand how doubly difficult it is to turn your own name, your lifestyle, into a universally known brand: Coca Cola, McDonalds, Chrysler (going, going, gone) and Paris Hilton.

OK, she's riding on the coat tails of the Hilton Hotel chain, but nevertheless it is a remarkable achievement to elbow yourself into magazines, newspapers, on the radio, television and movies day after day, week after week, year after year. Most of us can't even get our minor successes mentioned in the local newspaper or church bulletin.

Then imagine what it's like to live with that kind of fame. Whenever you get into a car wearing a short skirt, the "paps" are busy snapping away trying to find out whether your panties are Simone Perele or Chantelle -- that's if you're wearing panties.

Think what it is like to leave a favorite night club with blood thirsty gossip columnists outside, their columns already written: "Drunken Paris Hilton leaves trendy LA nightspot after six hours of binge boozing". Fact is, Paris was probably there to launch a new brand of rum or vodka. In other words, she was paid to be there, paid to cause a scene and create a stir. The idiots are the journos who buy into the trick every single time, not to mention the readers who just lap it up 24-7.

Sarah Palin toenail art

I love Paris Hilton for these very reasons. She has surrounded herself with some of the sharpest business minds in America, people who could pick up a stale doughnut and launch it as tomorrow's must-have gourmet meal.

It's not only Hollywood that builds up and then tears down successful, beautiful women. Think politics. Think Sarah Palin. Remember how she was savaged by legs goddess Katie Couric?

Poor Palin, a bambi to the public spotlight, thought she was going to breeze through a couple of easy interviews with Ms. Couric. What she didn't know was that Couric's team had spent night and day preparing Palin's humiliation and fall. They'd done their homework, discovered Palin's weak points, then sent Katie in as attack dog, snapping and biting at Palin's heels until she toppled like a felled Alaskan moose.

Sarah Palin's in her beloved black pumps

I might agree that Palin's politics are a few degrees west of wacko, but you can't go attacking a sexy and successful woman simply because she loves Naughty Monkey shoes and Estrada accessories.

I was happy for Sarah when she got some serious money to spend at Neiman Marcus, Macy's and Bloomingdales. You try buying anything other than indigenous handicraft and bear skin capes on the northern slopes of Alaska.

Deborah Norville, is she the thinking man's Katie Couric?

Of course, when Sarah had the opportunity to spend some serious money on clothes, she locked into a buying frenzy .... "Valentino jacket, I'll have that; Prada shoes, want them; Gucci purse, must have that; Louboutin heels, can't leave the store without them; cute $2500 suit for the baby, it's a bargain; $600 Armani pants for Todd, a snip".

Paris Hilton, style icon and global brand name

What Palin's critics failed to understand was that the woman, far from being a hopeless hick was one of America's most popular governors, someone who had almost single-handedly taken down Alaska's old boy network, dull 70 and 80 year old men who siphoned federal money into dubious pet projects and held the oil industry to ransom. Palin shook up Alaska, and she did it wearing short skirts and sandals with nail art on her toes. That, if anything, is an achievement we should celebrate.

Another gorgeous woman I have to bow down before is tiny Dana Perino, who stepped from nowhere to become a spokesperson and press secretary for one of America's most unpopular presidents, yes, George W. Bush.

Lisa Randall, scientist and academic power player at Harvard

Give yourself an entire week and you still won't come up with a more difficult job than selling George W. to the world. Don't get me wrong, he's a very nice guy, one of the most pleasant presidents in living memory, but as leader of the free world and commander in chief, hmmmmm, ummmmm, no.

Dana Perino's job was as difficult as selling sand to the Saudis, or Wisconsin cheese in Vermont. She had to stand before the sharpened pencils of the Washington press corps and defend every nonsensical statement, every U-turn, blunder, and act of buffoonery that came out of the Oval Office.

She did it with pert perfection, wrinkling her nose at rudeness, cocking a head at aloof arrogance, and flashing beautiful teeth at jaded hacks who asked the same questions time and time and time again.

What's more she met her husband, a dour, sarcastic Brit many years her senior, on an international flight. That, surely, gives us hope. We can meet the woman of our dreams, a sexy, successful world-leading woman, on a bus, a train, or while waiting in line for our peppermint chip latte at Starbucks.

Women are turned on by men with money, fame or power.  It works the other way, too. Plenty of men love women who can lead from the front, withstand bitter attacks from critics and snipers, and still hold together their work and families. We celebrate attractive, successful women leaders such as Sarah Palin, Nancy Pelosi, Michelle Obama, Dana Perino and, yes, Paris Hilton.
