OBAMA'S CABINET will comprise an inner circle or top five (secretary of state, secretary tof the treasury, secretary of defense, attorney general and secretary of homeland security). The big question is Hillary Clinton ... will she, won't she be secretary of state?

What's the Cabinet and What Does it Do?

The United States cabinet consists of the senior officers of the executive branch. There's an inner and outer circle

The inner circle, or inner cabinet, comprises the big four: secretary of state, secretary to the treasury, secretary of defense, and the attorney general.

In recent years, the secretary of homeland security has been considered close to the inner circle, making is possible to speak of a big five.

Since Franklin Roosevelt the cabinet has declined in influence. It has become customary for the president to act through the Exectuive Office of the President (EOP), based at the Whitehouse, and the National Security Council.

TOP CONTENDERS FOR JOBS IN OBAMA'S CABINET

Secretary of State: Hillary Clinton

Secretary to the Treasury: Timothy Geithner

Secretary of Defense: Robert Gates, Chuck Hagel, Richard Danzig, Jack Reed

Attorney general: Eric H. Holder

Secretary of homeland security: Janet Napolitano

President-elect Obama is currently choosing his cabinet. Each person must undergo a strict vetting process, looking far back into their past for any information that might be damaging or embarrassing to the president. It might be such matters as non-payment of taxes, receipt of gifts from lobbyists and businesses, employment of undocumented workers, drug abuse, marital infidelity, or controversial remarks made in articles, public letter, or emails.

The leading contenders for Obama's inner cabinet are Eric Holder for attorney general; Hillary Clinton for secretary of state; Lawrence Summers for secretary of the treasury, and Robert Gates for secretary of defense. And of course Janet Napolitano for homeland security.

Best bet for a Republican in the inner circle is Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense.
