Katire Couric Interviews
Sarah Palin

Palin snapped
back: "Katie, John McCain wants to stop me saying lots
of things, but I know one thing for sure, Senator McCain
does not know God's will. I know there's a Plan and I hope
John McCain is part of that plan in the same way I am."
When asked why
McCain and Palin were so successful at making inroads among
white women with little education, Palin replied:
"People without education don't tend to think so much,
so it's easier for them to support me. Joe Six Pack America
and Wendy Wine Cooler, they look at me and see one of their
own, a determined woman, not too bright, who has really
struggled to get ahead in life., and they're saying, hey,
it's about time we were in the White House. Before I came
along, John McCain was falsely perceived as this
out-of-touch old guy who was going to lose. I made
conservatives feel good about themselves again. If we lose,
we'll do it in style."

| Couric
commented that Rush Limbaugh had been pushing Palin as VP
for nearly a year. "Are you a Rush listener and
supporter?" Couric asked with smile.
"Katie, I
look at it this way: Rush is popular but I'm just a
populist, so we appeal to a different demographic. I think
it's great he's on my side and I like his name. I could have
called one of my kids Rush."
Sensing a
massive misstep by Palin, Couric asked for clarification?
"Are you saying we have won the war in Iraq. You claim
total victory?"
When asked how
Russia's proximity to Alaska's made her a foreign policy
expert, Palin seemed confused: "It's funny that a
comment like that was -- kind of made to -- cari -- I don't
know, you know, the word, cari [caricature? editor's
suggestion]... Anyway, reporters, I guess. "
"Mock
you?" suggested Couric.
"Yeah,
mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah. But you see, being
close to Russia certainly does enhance my credentials
because our-- our next-door neighbor is a country, therefore
a foreign country. I mean I am the executive of a state that
is next to a country, which makes it foreign. Russia is
foreign. So is Canada. Our neighbors are foreign
countries."
"Have you
ever had to negotiate with Russian delegations?" asked
Couric. |
|
"Why sure," said Palin. "And
it's very important when you consider even national security
issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into
the air space of the United States of America, where --
where do they go, Katie? It's Alaska. Those Russian planes
leave Russia and where are they? They're in Alaska. Think
about it. It's just over the border. It's from Alaska that
we send those people of ours to make sure that an eye is
being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because
they are right there. They are right next to -- to our
state."

Couric tried to press Palin on
weighty matters such as climate change, the Wall Street
crisis, and health care reform, but she came up empty
handed.
