CURRENT
PHOTO PROJECTS
From August 2008 until September 2010, I will traveling and working throughout the world, working on the words and images for three books to be published in 2011. It will be nature images for two of the projects, and urban and industrial landscapes for the third book. I'll be doing my usual science work alongside these projects. Recent years have involved a lot of traveling. The stratosphere: I have spent five years documenting research into the stratosphere, mainly the ozone layer. I cover all aspects of the subject, from the theoretical work at universities, to the practical task of launching ballons and rockets, preparation of payloads, mission control, and the data crunching afterwards. Much of the work involves photographing polar stratospheric clouds in the Arctic. Reactions on the surface of these clouds destroy ozone. Climate change: I concentrate on cutting-edge research into climate change and global warming. My emphasis is on boreal, sub-Arctic and Arctic regions. Meteorology: Over the next 10 years I aim to build up a huge portfolio of photographs documenting weather forecasting and climate modeling. Urban climate: This is my day-to-day work, requiring attention to the factors affecting and determining urban climate. I pay particular attention to the urban heat island, air quality, transport, industry, and alternative sources of power. Girls and women in science: This project provides positive and exciting images aimed at encouraging girls to pursue scientific research. Industrial processes: This work illustrates industrial processes from start to finish, for example how paper is made; how refuse is treated to produce energy in the form of methane; sustainable forestry in action; how the fishing industry works, and so on. |
