Here's the Sarah Palin timeline, listing each of the important events on her path to power. We begin with John McCain's call to Sarah Palin on August 24.

In a  Chicago Tribune interview, responding to criticism of her $150,000 shopping spree, she says: "That whole thing is just, bad!" she said. "Oh, if people only knew how frugal we are... It's kind of painful to be criticized for something when all the facts are not out there and are not reported... $150 grand? It wasn't anywhere near that. Those are not ours. We give those back, those go to charity or they'll be auctioned off or whatever. That's not even my property. So to be criticized for that, that is not who we are... I think some of them were in the belly of the plane." Why

SARAH PALIN TALKS TO THE PRESS

[Read Sarah Palin's Private Concession Speech in Missouri]

September 11, with Charles Gibson of ABC

"I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can't blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on, reform of this country and victory in the war, you can't blink. So I didn't blink then even when asked to run as his running mate."

September 17, to Sean Hannity of Fox News

"Well, it was an unfair attack on the verbiage that Senator McCain chose to use because the fundamentals, as he was having to explain afterwards, he means our workforce, he means the ingenuity of the American. And of course, that is strong and that is the foundation of our economy."

September 25, to Katie Couric of CBS

"I'm not one of those who maybe came from a background of, you know, kids who perhaps graduate college and their parents give them a passport and give them a backpack and say go off and travel the world."

September 30, to Hugh Hewitt

"They're just not used to someone coming in from the outside saying you know what? It's time that normal Joe six-pack American is finally represented in the position of vice presidency. and I think that that's kind of taken some people off guard, and they're out of sorts, and they're ticked off about it, but it's motivation for John McCain and I to work that much harder to make sure that our ticket is victorious, and we put government back on the side of the people of Joe six-pack like me."

October 22, with NBC's Brian Williams

"It is so naive and so dangerous for a presidential candidate to just proclaim that they would be willing to sit down with a leader like Ahmadinejad, and just talk about the problems, the issues that are facing them, that's some ill-preparedness right there."

October 23, with Dr. James Dobson

"We have very solid planks in the platform that will allow us to build an even stronger foundation for our country. It's all good and it's encouraging. You would maybe have assumed that we would have gotten further away from those strong planks. But no, they're there, they're solid, we stand on them and again I believe that it is the right agenda for the country at this time."

October 24, with Chicago Tribune

""It's not all about the money, it's not all about budgets.. It's about that spirit of acceptance and embracing that diversity that is in the world with children who are special, a little bit different from the norm."

October 24, with Brian Williams of NBC's Nightly News

"I am going to continue to love my country. I am going to continue to support my son who is over there in Iraq fighting for the freedoms in this country. I am going to continue to be, um, such a proponent of all that it is this country represents. I think it's perfect ideals and values that we represent."

WHAT'S NEXT FOR SARAH PALIN?

Safe to say, Sarah Palin is not the Republican messiah in 2008. She has fired up the Republican base, but evangelical support is not enough to get a candidate elected president.

Palin will have to appeal to educated, bookish, intellectual Republicans if she is to stand a chance in 2012. These are the Republicans -- Charles Fried, Colin Powell, Charles Buckley -- that Sarah Palin has scared off.

Those intellectual Republicans who still support her, and there are a few, will have to take Palin under their wing and introduce to required reading, required company and conversation.

You can't bluff your way through an entire election campaign with index cards and talking points. You need to know subjects in depth; you need to be able to explain yourself coherently. Those abilities can be developed by mixing with bright people, by reading books, and studying in-depth. Palin will need to spend less time shopping for clothes and moose hunting and more time educating herself and building a broad power base.
